Finding the Latest Costume Styles for Halloween

Just like regular fashion, Halloween fashion ebbs and flows a bit with whatever is popular at the time. Something like leg-warmers or parachute pants are not considered fashionable anymore and, likewise, some may consider a Napoleon Dynamite or Barney costume somewhat out of date. It might seem silly to some, but costume style is important. After all, what ten-year-old wants to be the odd-one-out on a street of kids dressed in the latest costume styles?

Consider the following as sources for some of the latest Halloween costume styles:

Recent Movies

Recent movies refer to the last five years. A costume of Captain Jack Sparrow or a Twilight-like vampire or Harry Potter is more popular now than, say, a costume from Spaceballs, E.T., or Beetlejuice. With all the new, popular comic movies coming out, comic character costumes are always good.

Recent Television Shows

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and anything associated with them, were hugely popular in the eighties and nineties. As far as the latest Halloween costumes, though, they don’t really work. SpongeBob, Naruto, Family Guy, or other recent shows make good costume ideas.

Perennially Popular Costumes

The perennial costumes aren’t very recent, or they have little to no pop culture connection, yet they remain popular. Cowboys, knights, princesses, food, or animals are always good. Star Wars, Star Trek, and Winnie the Pooh are decades-old franchises that are still great for costumes. Popular literary characters like Huck Finn seem less affected by the passage of time, and they still make good costumes.

The latest costume styles for Halloween shouldn’t be hard to find. But parents should keep in mind that although a costume was popular when they were kids, it might not be popular anymore.
